There is nothing particularly special about the characters of Unseen Academicals. They are all fairly typical of the fantasy genre, with a few quirks and eccentricities that make them unique. However, there is one character, Mr. Nutt, who stands out as being particularly unusual. Mr. Nutt is an orc, a race of creatures that are typically considered to be savage and brutal. However, Mr. Nutt is highly intelligent and civilized, and he is one of the most important characters in the book.

On the other hand, if you’re more in the mood for something a little more… modern, check out this clip from the recent live action adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s The Colour of Magic.

I think I’m going to go curl up with a good book (or four) and have a nice, quiet, happy Discworld Day.

The author of The Discworld Companion says something about the book:

‘All the Discworld books have “extras” – footnotes, appendices, maps – and, while they are difficult to incorporate into an audio book, they are not, however, difficult to incorporate into a book about the Discworld books.’

And that’s what The Discworld Companion does, it gives you information about the characters, places, things and events (and their origins in the real world) that you encounter in the Discworld novels, and there’s plenty of it!

I find Stephen Briggs’ reading of the Companion to be excellent and enjoyable, which is exactly how it should be.

I would highly recommend this book to all Discworld fans.
