In 1944, a young woman named Tess DeMello is forced to marry a man she does not love, in order to save her family from financial ruin. Tess’s new husband, Henry, is a kind and gentle man, but she cannot help but feel trapped by the arranged marriage.
One day, Tess meets a man named Nate, who is charming and handsome. Nate is everything that Tess desires in a husband, and she soon falls in love with him. However, Nate is married, and Tess knows that she can never have him.
Despite her happiness with Henry, Tess cannot forget about Nate. She starts to withdraw from her husband and becomes distant. Henry begins to suspect that Tess is having an affair, and he hires a private investigator to follow her.
The investigator discovers that Tess is meeting Nate in secret. Tess is confronted by Henry, and she admits that she is in love with Nate. Henry is heartbroken, but he agrees to give Tess a divorce.
Tess is free to marry Nate, and the two of them live happily ever after.
