Minka Kent is a young adult and new adult fiction author. She’s best known for her debut novel The Memory Watcher, which was published in 2015. The novel was praised for its unique premise and for Kent’s lyrical writing style. Kent’s second novel, The Summer Girls, was published in 2016. The Summer Girls is a coming-of-age story about three sisters who spend the summer at their grandmother’s house in Cape Cod. The novel was praised for its complex characters and for its exploration of family dynamics. Kent’s third novel, The Drowning Season, was published in 2017. The Drowning Season is a psychological thriller about a woman who starts to believe that her husband is trying to kill her. This series of work will explore the intersection of race and gender in the American South. Specifically, I will be looking at how black women’s experiences are shaped by both sexism and racism. I will also be examining the role that religion plays in black women’s lives, and how it both helps and hinders them.
