Louise Erdrich is a bestselling, National Book Award-winning writer of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Her work often explores the lives of Native Americans in the United States.
Erdrich was born in 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota, to a German-American father and a French-Ojibwe mother. She grew up on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota, where her parents were teachers.
Erdrich attended Dartmouth College, where she majored in English and studied writing with the poet Robert Bly. She earned her M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
Erdrich’s first novel, Love Medicine, was published in 1984. It tells the story of two families, the Kashpaws and the Lamartines, on the fictional Chippewa reservation of Pillager, North Dakota.
Erdrich has published more than a dozen novels, as well as poetry, children’s books, and a memoir. Her novel The Round House won the National Book Award for Fiction in 2012.
Erdrich is the owner of Birchbark Books, an independent bookstore in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
