In the story, Joel is a student at Armedius Academy, where he studies Rithmatics under the tutelage of Professor Fitch. When a powerful Rithmatist named Callum Roehmer goes missing, Joel is drafted by the Professor to help find him. The search leads them into the dangerous Undercity, where they must face deadly Rithmatist-hunting beasts known as the Wild Chalklings. In the end, they find Callum, but he is not the only one who has been taken by the Chalklings.
