Elizabeth Acevedo is a Dominican-American writer, performer, and speaker. Her work focuses on the Afro-Latina experience, Black girlhood, and slam poetry. Acevedo is the author of the National Book Award-winning novel in verse, The Poet X, as well as the award-winning picture book, With the Fire on High. Her other works include the young adult novels, Clap When You Land and Bruja Born.

The book is about a girl named Xiomara who is discovering her identity as a poet. She is trying to find her voice and express herself through her writing. She is also dealing with some personal issues, such as her mother’s strictness, her feelings for a boy, and her own self-doubt.
