The book is written as a “technical report” of the events surrounding an investigation of the outbreak of an alien microorganism in Piedmont, New Mexico. The fictional narrative is interlaced with descriptions of the technical aspects of the investigation and the microbes.

The Andromeda Strain appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list for 39 weeks and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1970. It won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1970.

The novel has been credited as one of the inspirations for the 1980 film Alien.
