The Stay Close. Stay Alive. campaign was launched in 2003 in response to the high level of deaths and serious injuries amongst young people in rural areas. The objective of the campaign is to reduce the number of young people killed or seriously injured in rural areas by raising awareness of the dangers of rural roads.

The campaign has three core messages:

• Wear a seatbelt – it could save your life

• Drive to the conditions – take care on rural roads

• Slow down – speeding kills

The campaign has been delivered through a mix of television, radio, outdoor, print and online advertising, as well as through local events and school visits.

In 2013, the campaign was refreshed with a new look and feel, and a new focus on the dangers of speeding. The refreshed campaign features the tagline ‘Slow down. Speed kills’.

In 2015, the campaign was refreshed again, with a new focus on the dangers of driving while tired. The refreshed campaign features the tagline ‘Don’t drive tired. Take a break’.
