Nicholas Sparks is an American novelist and screenwriter. He has published twenty novels and two non-fiction books. Several of his novels have been adapted into films, including The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Last Song, The Lucky One, Safe Haven, and The Longest Ride.

Sparks was born on December 31, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Jill Emma Marie (née Thoene) and Patrick Michael Sparks, a professor of business. He was the middle of three children, with an older brother, Michael Earl Sparks, and a younger sister, Danielle. His father was of German, Irish, and English ancestry, while his mother was of Norwegian and German descent. The family lived in Fair Oaks, California, when Sparks was a child. He graduated from Bella Vista High School in 1984.

Sparks attended Notre Dame on a track and field scholarship, where he ran the 400-meter hurdles and participated in long-distance running. After graduating from Notre Dame in 1988, he returned to California and took a job as a commodities broker. He was fired from his job after one year.
