Persuasion is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1818. The story concerns Anne Elliot, a young Englishwoman of 27 years, whose family moves to lower their expenses and reduce their debt by renting their home to an Admiral and his wife. They take a house in Bath, where Anne Elliot meets and falls in love with Captain Frederick Wentworth, an agreeable and attractive man who had been engaged to her seven years previously. However, Wentworth believes that Anne is now too old and too set in her ways to be a suitable wife for him, and so he breaks off the engagement. Anne is heartbroken and believes that she will never love again. However, Wentworth eventually realizes his mistake and comes back to Anne, and the two are happily married.
