Iles was born in 1960 in Germany, where his father was stationed as a member of the United States Army, and grew up in Natchez, Mississippi. He attended the University of Mississippi, where he received a B.A. in English and journalism. He then worked as a journalist for a time before turning to writing fiction full-time.

Iles’ first novel, Spandau Phoenix, was published in 1993. It was followed by a string of successful thrillers, including Black Cross (1994), Turning Angel (2005), and Blood Memory (2007). Iles has also written several non-fiction books, including a memoir about his near-fatal car accident, Mississippi Blood (2017).

Iles’ novels are known for their gritty realism and for their often dark and violent subject matter. Many of his books have been adapted for film and television, including the movies Rules of Engagement (2000) and Trapped (2002).
