She was born in London and was educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. In her early career she appeared in episodes of The Saint, The Avengers and The Baron.
Her most notable film appearances include: The Man in the Brown Suit (1949), 4:50 from Paddington (1957), The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and The Guns of Navarone (1961).
She was married to actor/director Richard Attenborough from 1945 until his death in 2014. They had three children.
