The biographical note tells the story of Peter Benchley, the author of the famous novel Jaws. Benchley was born in 1940, and his father was a prominent journalist and editor at The New York Times. Benchley’s grandfather had also been a journalist, and his great-grandfather was the co-founder of the American Museum of Natural History. Benchley grew up in New York City and graduated from Harvard University in 1962. He then worked as a journalist for Newsweek magazine. In 1964, Benchley married Wendy Wesson, with whom he would have two children.
In 1974, Benchley’s novel Jaws was published. The book was an instant success, and was made into a hugely popular movie by Steven Spielberg in 1975. Benchley went on to write several more novels, including The Deep (1976), The Island (1979), and White Shark (1994). He also wrote the screenplay for the movie Jaws 2 (1978). Benchley died in 2006 at the age of 65.
