Maya Angelou was an African American author, poet, and civil rights activist. She is best known for her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which chronicles her early life. Angelou was born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. Her parents divorced when she was three, and she and her brother were sent to live with their grandmother in St. Louis, Arkansas. As a child, Angelou was mistreated by her grandmother’s boyfriend and was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. These experiences had a profound effect on her and shaped her views on race and gender.

After moving to San Francisco with her mother at the age of thirteen, Angelou began to write poetry. She later joined the Harlem Writers Guild and became active in the civil rights movement. In the early 1960s, she worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. In 1968, Angelou was asked to read a poem at King’s funeral. The poem, “On the Pulse of Morning,” made her the first African American woman to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.

There is no set series of work that will be written, but I plan to write several more articles on the topics of self-care and self-love. I hope to continue to explore different aspects of these topics and offer readers practical tips and advice on how to incorporate self-care and self-love into their lives. I also hope to continue to write about my own journey in learning to love and care for myself, in the hopes that my story will inspire others to do the same.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a 1969 autobiography by Maya Angelou. The book tells the story of Angelou’s childhood and her early adult years, up to the age of 17, and is the first in a seven-volume series. The book is notable for its frank discussion of race, gender, and poverty.
