I, Claudius

I, Claudius is a novel by Robert Graves, published in 1934. The novel is written in the first person from the perspective of the Roman Emperor Claudius, and it chronicles the history of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty and the early years of the Roman Empire.

Graves draws heavily on historical sources to provide a detailed and accurate portrayal of Roman life in the first century AD. I, Claudius was hugely popular when it was first published, and it has remained in print ever since. It has been adapted for television twice, first in a 1976 BBC series starring Derek Jacobi, and then in a 2013 BBC/HBO series starring Tom Hiddleston.

This I, Claudius earned the position of number one in the New York Times Bestseller list for Fiction.
