The story Holes is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who is sent to a juvenile detention center in Texas called Camp Green Lake. The camp is a dry, hot, and dusty place where the boys have to dig holes all day long. The holes are five feet deep and five feet wide. The boys have to dig the holes because the warden, Mrs. Walker, believes that there is a treasure buried somewhere on the property. The boys are also told that they have to dig the holes because it will build character.

Stanley Yelnats is sent to Camp Green Lake because he was accused of stealing a pair of shoes that belonged to a famous baseball player. Stanley is innocent, but he is sent to the camp anyway.

At the camp, Stanley meets a boy named Zero. Zero is a small boy who doesn’t speak much. Stanley and Zero become friends and help each other out.

One day, Stanley finds a leather bag in one of the holes he is digging. The bag has a gold coin in it. Stanley gives the coin to Zero.
