His Majesty’s Dragon is a novel by Naomi Novik, published in 2006. The novel is the first in the Temeraire series, which follows the adventures of a dragon and his handler during the Napoleonic Wars.
The book introduces the character of William Laurence, a captain in the British navy, who captures a dragon egg and hatches it, bonding with the dragon, whom he names Temeraire. The two are soon drafted into the Aerial Corps to fight against Napoleon’s forces.
The book was well-received by critics and was nominated for several awards. It won the Locus Award for Best First Novel in 2007.
There is nothing particularly special about the content or characters of His Majesty’s Dragon. It is a typical fantasy novel with dragons, wizards, and warriors. However, the author, Naomi Novik, does a great job of making the world and characters believable and relatable.
Some listeners are inspired by the story to learn more about the Napoleonic Wars, while others are inspired by the dragon, Temeraire, to learn more about dragons.
