Frank Herbert was an American science fiction writer best known for his novel Dune and its five sequels.

Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1920 and raised in nearby Portland, Oregon. He began writing science fiction stories in high school and sold his first story, “Looking for Something”, to Astounding Science Fiction magazine in 1939. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and then attended the University of Washington, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1949.

Herbert’s first novel, The Dragon in the Sea, was published in 1955. His most famous work, Dune, was published in 1965 and became a bestseller. Herbert wrote five sequels to Dune, the last of which, Chapterhouse: Dune, was published posthumously in 1985.

Herbert died of a heart attack in 1986.
