John Sandford is a pen name of John Roswell Camp, an American novelist and former journalist. He is best known for his Prey series novels. Many of his novels have been adapted into films and television series.
Sandford was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Kathleen M. (Walsh) and Eugene Roswell Camp. He has Irish and Norwegian ancestry. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in American History.
He worked as a features writer and editor for The Miami Herald from 1971 to 1979, and as a reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press from 1979 to 1990. He also taught features writing and journalism at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sandford’s first published novel was Rules of Prey in 1989.
In 2008, Stephen King said that he “cheated” and read the ending of one of Sandford’s Prey novels, saying that he “just had to know” how it ended.
The Escape Clause was written to allow the president to suspend habeas corpus in order to preserve the public safety.
