The story then follows the perspective of Duncan Idaho, a ghola who has been resurrected from the dead and is now in the service of the Atreides family. Duncan is sent to infiltrate the Harkonnen ranks and gather intelligence on their plans.

Meanwhile, the Atreides matriarch, Lady Jessica, is training her young daughter, Alia, in the ways of the Bene Gesserit. Jessica is also secretly meeting with the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, who has come to suspect that Alia may be possessed by a demon.

As the story progresses, the Harkonnen plot against the Atreides is revealed, and it becomes clear that they intend to destroy the family once and for all. Duncan Idaho manages to warn the Atreides of the impending attack, but they are outnumbered and outgunned.
