Jane Collingwood is the second lead character in the story, A Pocket Full of Rye. She is a young woman who works as a secretary for the protagonist, Miss Marple. When Miss Marple is called away to solve a mystery, Jane goes with her and ends up playing a pivotal role in the investigation.

The story is set in the small town of Maldon, England. Mr. and Mrs. Spenlow live in a small cottage with their two children, John and Jane. John is a student at the local school, and Jane is a housewife. One day, John comes home from school and finds his mother dead in her bed. His father is nowhere to be found. John goes to the police and tells them what happened.

The police find Mr. Spenlow’s body in a ditch. They also find a pocket full of rye. The rye is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results show that the rye was poisoned.

The police question everyone in the town. They find out that Mrs. Spenlow was having an affair with a man named Harry. Harry is arrested and charged with murder.

At the trial, the prosecutor says that Harry poisoned the rye so that Mrs. Spenlow would die. Harry’s lawyer says that Harry is innocent. The jury decides that Harry is guilty and he is sentenced to death.

Harry’s wife visits him in prison. She tells him that she knows he is innocent. Harry’s wife asks the governor of the prison to grant Harry a pardon. The governor agrees
