Zora Neale Hurston is one of the most important African American authors of the 20th century. She was born in 1891 in Alabama and grew up in Florida. She attended Howard University and Barnard College. She wrote novels, short stories, and essays. Her best-known book is Their Eyes Were Watching God. She died in 1960.

The Barracoon was written in 1931 by the African-American author, Zora Neale Hurston. It is a non-fiction account of the life of Cudjo Lewis, the last known living slave who was brought to the United States from Africa.
