In 1815, France is a country on the verge of revolution. The economy is in shambles and the people are angry. The government is corrupt and the king is weak. In the midst of all this, a young man named Jean Valjean is released from prison after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean is an outcast, a pariah, and he has no hope for a better life.
But then Valjean meets a kind bishop who shows him compassion, and Valjean’s life is changed forever. He decides to turn over a new leaf and start anew. Valjean becomes a successful businessman and a respected member of the community. But his past catches up with him and he is pursued by a ruthless policeman, Javert. Valjean must go on the run to escape Javert’s clutches.
During his flight, Valjean meets a young woman named Fantine, who is desperate and alone. Valjean takes her under his wing and promises to care for her daughter, Cosette. But Javert is hot on Valjean’s trail, and the three of them must flee for their lives.
