Walls was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and grew up in Welch, West Virginia. She is the eldest of four children. Her father, Rex Walls, was an alcoholic and her mother, Rose Mary, was a creative and mentally unstable woman. The family often moved around, living in poverty.
