Ruth Ware is a best-selling British author of psychological suspense novels. Her debut novel, In a Dark, Dark Wood, was an instant New York Times bestseller, and her subsequent novels The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, and The Death of Mrs. Westaway have all been critical and commercial successes. Ware’s novels have been translated into over 30 languages and her work has been adapted for film and television. She lives in London with her husband and two sons.

One by One is a young adult novel series written by Lois Lowry. The series follows the lives of four teenage girls who are best friends. The girls live in a small town in Maine, and each book in the series focuses on one of the girls as she goes through a pivotal moment in her life.

The first book in the series, Number the Stars, was published in 1989 and won the Newbery Medal. It tells the story of Annemarie Johansen, a ten-year-old girl living in Copenhagen during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, is Jewish, and Annemarie must help her family escape to Sweden before the Nazis can send them to concentration camps.

The second book, The Giver, was published in 1993 and was also awarded the Newbery Medal. It tells the story of Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy living in a dystopian society where people are not allowed to feel emotions. Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory, and he soon discovers the dark secrets of his society.
