In Nothing More Dangerous, fifteen-year-old Boady Sanden lives in rural Missouri in the late 1800s. Boady is white, and his best friend, Darlene, is African American. Darlene’s family has been in the area for generations, and Boady’s family is relatively new. Boady’s father is a lawyer, and Boady is being groomed to follow in his footsteps.
One day, Boady finds a book hidden in the woods near his home. The book is called The Origin of the Species, and it is by Charles Darwin. Boady is fascinated by the book, and he starts to question everything he has been taught about religion and science.
Boady starts to distance himself from Darlene, and he begins to spend more time with his new friend, a boy named Walter. Walter is from a wealthy family, and he is a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Boady starts to believe that Walter’s ideas about white supremacy are correct.
