The novel begins with Kyoshi’s birth in the Earth Kingdom village of Chin Village. Kyoshi is born with Earthbending abilities, which sets her apart from the rest of her village, who are all non-benders. Kyoshi is shunned by her village, but she finds friends in Rangi and Koko, two other outcasts. The three of them are constantly bullied by the other kids in the village.
One day, when Kyoshi is seven, she encounters a group of bandits who are terrorizing her village. Kyoshi uses her Earthbending to defeat the bandits and save her village. After this event, Kyoshi is revered by her village and becomes a local legend.
Kyoshi’s legend grows even larger when, at the age of sixteen, she is revealed to be the Avatar. Kyoshi is trained in the other three elements by her friends
