Pieces of Her

There is nothing particularly special about the characters of Pieces of Her. They are all relatively ordinary people who are thrown into extraordinary circumstances.

A few years ago, when I was teaching creative writing, I came across a novel that I thought would make a great movie. You’ve probably heard of it: it’s called Gone Girl. It’s a thriller, a whodunit, a domestic suspense – and it’s also a searing commentary on the state of marriage in our culture.

I was so taken with the book that I decided to option the rights to it. I imagined it as a psychological thriller in the style of Hitchcock, with a strong, intelligent female lead.

The problem was, I didn’t have a lot of money to option the rights, so I had to get creative. I ended up optioning the rights to the book for $1, with the understanding that if I ever sold the movie, the author would get a percentage of the profits.

It was a long shot, but I was convinced that the book had potential. And, as it turns out, I was right.

The book was a huge success, and the movie rights were sold to 20th Century Fox for a seven-figure sum. The author, Gillian Flynn, went on to adapted her own book for the screen
