However, when Connell’s mother becomes ill and he has to drop out of college, their relationship changes. Marianne begins to feel guilty about her own privilege, and Connell becomes increasingly resentful.

The story culminates in a break-up, after which Marianne moves to New York to pursue her career. Connell remains in Ireland, working as a janitor. The story is told from their alternating perspectives.
