Anna Karenina is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, first published in serial installments in 1873–1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Tolstoy clashed with editor Mikhail Katkov over political issues that arose in the final installment (Tolstoy’s negative view of Russia’sslavophile policies). Tolstoy then refused to allow the novel to be published in book form.
