Auel was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1936, and grew up in the suburbs. She began writing when she was just six years old, and sold her first story when she was sixteen. In 1977, Auel’s first novel, The Clan of the Cave Bear, was published. It was an instant success, and was followed by five more books in the Earth’s Children series. Auel’s novels are known for their detailed and realistic portrayals of prehistoric life, and her work has been praised by both scientists and literary critics.

Auel continues to write, and her latest novel, The Land of Painted Caves, was published in 2011. She currently lives in Idaho with her husband.

I will also be attending various art events and observing how art is used in the public sphere. I hope to gain a better understanding of how art can be used to create positive change in society, and to learn from the artists who are already doing this work.
